I visited Amazon Start-up event in Seattle on April 26th. The folks from Amazon demostrated Amazon Web Services to a group of entrepreneurs and VCs. There was about 200 people or so.
One of the Amazon Web Services that got my attention was S3 which provides a simple web services interface that can be used to store and retrieve any amount of data, at any time, from anywhere on the web. It gives any developer access to the same highly scalable, reliable, fast, inexpensive data storage infrastructure that Amazon uses to run its own global network of web sites. Pricing on Amazon S3 Service (effective June 1st, 2007):
Storage
$0.15 per GB-Month of storage used
Data Transfer
$0.10 per GB - all data uploaded
$0.18 per GB - first 10 TB / month data downloaded
$0.16 per GB - next 40 TB / month data downloaded
$0.13 per GB - data downloaded / month over 50 TB
Data transferred between Amazon S3 and Amazon EC2 is free of charge. For more information visit aws.amazon.com/s3.
That said, its a very cheap storage which is perfect for backups of data from your local, or on-demand systems like SalesForce.Com.
Amazon guys I talked with said that an S3 connector for Apatar would be a nice thing for a developer, or a business user to have. It would enable anyone backup data from anywhere to S3, and do all kinds of manipulations with data on its way to S3, all without writing a single line of code. For example, backup of data from Flickr or SalesForce.com, or even your local hard drive would be a job which even a 6th grader could do in under five minutes.
Apatar's core development team is now thinking whether to develop a connector to Amazon S3. I'm curiouis if there are any people from the Apatar community who would benefit from having such an Amazon S3 connector? |
